Ceremonial Plants

Balinese Hindu life is interwoven with complex religious ceremonies in which plants have an important role. Balinese Hindu ceremonies can be devided into five major catagories (Panca Yadnya) which reflect the Trimurti God-People-Nature:

  • Dewa Yadnya - ceremonies in worship of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi (God)
  • Pitra Yadnya - ceremonies in worship of ancestors and death rites of passage
  • Resi Yadnya - ceremonies in honour of priests and religious leaders
  • Manusia Yadnya - ceremonies to celebrate the stages of human life cycle
  • Bhuta Yadnya - ceremonies in worship of spirits of the underworld and nature.

The plants you will see in this collection are used daily in traditional Balinese ceremonies, temple decorations, offerings and the construction of musical instruments, tools and holy buildings.
